There’s something so fresh about new things. Whether it’s a new…dress…car…job… or a new year. I’m excitedly looking forward to the opportunities 2018 would present and bracing myself up to seize them all – I trust you are too?
My apologies for “disappearing” for a while. In December, we got really busy with our RAVE Digizen Workshop which was super impactful. Judging by the unanimous disappointment that the 2-days were over so fast, the attendees clearly had plenty of fun learning about digital citizenship. I also learnt a lot from interacting with the children & teens. Imagine them trying to educate me on the technical difference between “stealing” & “fapping” (lol).
On a more serious note though, one thing that came out strong in both the ages 7-12 and 13-16 classes, is the fact that there is a growing disconnect between parents and children. Majority of the children especially the teenagers have a “my parents don’t get me” mindset which puts mental & emotional pressure on them. Some believe they are depressed while others have adopted a “there’s no point – my parents would always complain” attitude. As I interact with young adults, I hear the same issue reiterated. What makes this a bit more worrisome is that as I discuss with parents, I hear “These children…I just don’t understand the way they think” or “what’s with the attitude?”. Clearly, there is an issue!
The onus is on us as parents to bridge this communication gap so that our children understand and actually benefit from our wealth of experience. To facilitate the bridging of this gap, RAVE Et Al would be hosting…
Parents, let’s talk and learn from each other. This is for every parent (mums & dads) – if you have been on this parenting journey for a while, I’m sure we could learn a thing or two from you; if you’re just starting, it pays to be proactive and if you’re halfway through, I’m sure you’d have loads to share and learn.
In this parenting business, no one has all the answers but we can share from each others wisdom & wealth of experience. I hope to see you at the ParentInvestment Roundtable. Oh, lest I forget to mention, the food at Scotch Bonnet is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s!
Happy new year everyone!!
To be a part of this ParentInvestment RoundTable, please RSVP by Wednesday 10th January 2018. Limited spaces available.
