#WWWOPK E2- 13 & Addicted to Porn

I am a 13-year-old boy and I am afraid that I am addicted to porn. I want to stop but I don’t know what to do. I wish I could tell my parents but I feel they would use it against me. For a child at this age to identify that he/she has a problem and consider talking to his/her parents about it is very brave and highly commendable. Let’s be honest, the risk of being stigmatized or the thought of being a disappointment to one’s parents can be really scary. It can also be heartbreaking for a parent to discover … Continue reading #WWWOPK E2- 13 & Addicted to Porn

What We Wish Our Parents Knew

As some of you may already know, RAVE (the organization that powers this blog) has over the past few years been conducting anonymous surveys among teenagers & emerging adults (ages 13 to about 22) on various issues they wish they could discuss with their parents but for one reason or the other, have not been able to do so. While a lot of the responses have been quite eye-opening, about 86% of the respondents said they didn’t bother discussing the issues with their parents because their mum or dad either felt awkward about having certain conversations, was overdramatic, overly spiritual … Continue reading What We Wish Our Parents Knew

Fostering The Father-Daughter Relationship

The quality of a father-daughter relationship plays a vital role in her journey to adulthood and influences her outlook to life generally. How a father treats his daughter usually has an effect on her relationship with other men throughout her teenage and adult life. A daughter looks to her father for affection, respect, and affirmation. Where she gets this in healthy doses from an early age, she will usually expect the same type of treatment from other males in her life and it highly unlikely that she would tolerate men who treat her disrespectfully or abusively. If, on the other hand, she … Continue reading Fostering The Father-Daughter Relationship

My Dad – My ATM

As we get ready to celebrate another Father’s Day, I find myself thinking about conversations we’ve had and particularly about the fact that you think I only see you as an ATM. To be honest dad, I can see why you would think so since most of our conversations revolve around money. It’s either money for school fees, pocket money or to buy this or that. As I tried to think of how I could change this notion, it hit me that you were right after all. I do see you as my ATM. The only problem dad is that … Continue reading My Dad – My ATM

“Difference” – Not Grounds For Disrespect

The video clip of the Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IGP) Idris struggling to read a speech in Kano went viral a few weeks ago and caused quite a rumpus. There were allegations that the video was “doctored” to make the IGP look bad but some swear that what went viral was what really happened. In this era of fake news and with technology making it possible to manipulate images it’s getting harder to know what to believe. But my focus today is not on fake news – that is a topic for another day. I was ruminating over the … Continue reading “Difference” – Not Grounds For Disrespect

Strict Mothers Have Better Children (New Research)

Erica Rascon-Ramirez, a professor at the University of Essex, conducted a study which showed that children who had strict parents, were more self-confident and secure. Over 15000 schoolgirls between the age of 13 and 14 took part in the 4-year study. The study also showed that successful people had very demanding mothers. Naturally, I thought about my mum and how she raised my two sisters and I. My mum was strict! But it came from a good place and thankfully we turned out okay😊 So based on my personal experience I’d say there just might be some  truth in this research and … Continue reading Strict Mothers Have Better Children (New Research)
